The washing machine spends much of its life surrounded by water and detergent. It would therefore be natural to think that it cleans itself with every wash. That would be convenient, but unfortunately it does not quite work that way.

Detergent and fabric softener residue, fabric fibres, hair, limescale and small objects forgotten in pockets can build up in the drum, dispenser drawer, door seal and filter. Add an enclosed, damp environment and you have the perfect accommodation for mould and bad smells: basically a little wellness retreat, but for microorganisms.

Knowing how to clean the washing machine helps you achieve fresher laundry, prevent drainage problems and keep the appliance working efficiently. Let us see how to proceed, one component at a time.

Why is it important to clean your washing machine?

A dirty washing machine does not necessarily show obvious stains. The first signs can be more subtle:

  • the laundry does not smell fresh even though it has just been washed;
  • a stale smell comes from the drum;
  • dark spots appear on the door seal;
  • the water drains slowly;
  • sticky residue remains in the dispenser drawer;
  • the detergent is not dispensed correctly.

Regular cleaning helps remove deposits that form in less visible areas and prevents blockages and bad smells. Manufacturers generally recommend cleaning not only the drum, but also the filter, door seal and detergent drawer.

How to clean your washing machine in 7 steps

Before you begin, check the manual for your model. The position of the filter, removable components and compatible products may vary between front-loading washing machines, slim models and top-loading appliances.

For manual cleaning, switch off the washing machine and unplug it. If you have just run a high-temperature cycle, wait for the water to cool before opening the filter.

1. Empty the drum and check hidden areas

Make sure the washing machine is completely empty. Check the drum, the door and especially the folds of the seal, where coins, buttons, tissues, hairpins and other archaeological finds from pockets may be hiding.

Remove anything you find straight away: as well as trapping dirt and moisture, metal objects could scratch the drum or obstruct drainage.

2. Clean the detergent drawer

The dispenser drawer is one of the places where detergent and fabric softener tend to harden. Over time, residue can block the small water channels and encourage mould to develop.

Remove the drawer following the instructions in the manual. Soak it in warm water, then clean the compartments with a soft toothbrush. Wipe the housing with a damp cloth too, paying particular attention to the upper nozzles.

Rinse, dry and reinsert the drawer correctly. If it cannot be removed, clean it in place with a damp cloth and a small brush, without forcing any of its parts.

3. Clean the door and exterior

A soft, slightly damp cloth is enough for the door glass and outer casing. If there are detergent splashes, you can use a small amount of mild detergent.

Avoid abrasive sponges, scouring pads and harsh products: the washing machine needs to become clean, not look as though it has survived a naval battle.

Finally, dry the control panel without leaving water around the buttons or programme selector.

4. How to clean the washing machine door seal

The seal on front-loading washing machines easily traps water, hair, fibres and detergent residue. To clean it:

  1. open the door fully;
  2. gently pull back the folds of the rubber seal;
  3. remove any objects and solid residue;
  4. wipe it with a microfibre cloth and warm water;
  5. when necessary, use a small amount of compatible mild detergent;
  6. wipe again with a clean cloth and dry thoroughly.

Do not pull the rubber too hard or use sharp tools. To reach the narrowest grooves, you can use a toothbrush with soft bristles.

If there are dark marks or mould, use only a product intended for washing machine seals and approved by the manufacturer. Some brands advise against using vinegar, acidic substances and bleach on the rubber because they could damage it.

After every wash, quickly drying the seal takes less than a minute and can save you from a much more demanding clean later.

5. How to clean the washing machine filter

The filter protects the drain pump by trapping fibres, hair and small objects. When it is blocked, the washing machine may drain slowly, stop during a programme or leave clothes very wet.

The filter is generally located behind a small flap at the lower front of the appliance, but this is not a universal rule: on some top-loading models it may be positioned elsewhere or may not be directly accessible.

To clean it:

  1. switch off the washing machine and unplug it;
  2. wait until the water inside is cold;
  3. place a few (lots of) cloths and a low container in front of the flap;
  4. use the emergency drain hose, if fitted;
  5. slowly loosen the filter to release the remaining water;
  6. remove it completely;
  7. remove hair, fibres, coins and any other residue;
  8. rinse it under running water;
  9. check that no foreign objects remain in the housing;
  10. refit the filter and close it carefully.

Do not open it while the machine is running, and do not use excessive force if it appears stuck: the plastic components could break.

The frequency depends on use and on the model. As a practical guideline, check it every two or three months, bringing the task forward if you often wash blankets, garments that shed a lot of fibres or fabrics covered in pet hair. Some manufacturers recommend intervals ranging from around two months to two or three cleanings per year.

6. Which programme should you use to clean the washing machine?

The best programme is the one designed specifically for appliance maintenance. Depending on the brand, it may have different names, such as Drum Clean, Machine Care and others.

The cycle must be run with an empty drum. Use a washing machine cleaner only in the quantity and position specified on the packaging and in the manual: some products go directly into the drum, while others must be placed in the dispenser drawer.

The dedicated programme automatically adjusts the temperature, water level, drum movements and duration. Some washing machines even display a reminder when it is time to run it.

If the model does not have a specific cycle, consult the manual to identify the recommended empty cycle and temperature. As an alternative, several manufacturers suggest a high-temperature cycle, often between 60 and 90 °C, but this is not a rule that applies to every appliance.

The Eco 40–60 programme, quick cycle and delicates cycle do not automatically replace the drum-cleaning function. In this case, improvising is less useful than reading the manual: yes, that very booklet we carefully put away and then can never find. Fortunately, it can often still be downloaded online.

7. Let the washing machine dry

Once the cycle has finished, wipe the seal with a dry cloth and leave the door ajar to encourage air circulation. When possible, leave the detergent drawer slightly open too.

Remember to remove the laundry as soon as the programme ends. Leaving damp garments in the drum for too long encourages odours to develop both on the laundry and inside the machine.

How to disinfect the washing machine without damaging it

Cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting are not exactly the same thing. Cleaning removes dirt and residue; disinfection requires a product with a specific action against microorganisms.

For normal household maintenance, regularly using the drum-cleaning programme with a compatible washing machine cleaner is generally sufficient. Actual disinfection can be useful in particular situations, for example after washing heavily contaminated fabrics or when mould has developed inside the machine.

Proceed as follows:

  1. check the manual to see which disinfectants are permitted;
  2. choose a product specifically intended for washing machines;
  3. follow the dosage, placement and contact time stated on the label;
  4. run the recommended cycle with an empty drum;
  5. run an additional rinse when required by the instructions;
  6. ventilate the room and wear gloves if indicated.

Bleach may be used only in models that allow it and in the quantities specified by the manufacturer. Do not pour it directly onto the seal and do not invent your own household dilutions.

Most importantly, never mix bleach, vinegar, ammonia, descaler or other cleaning products. The combination can release dangerous fumes. Even when using just one product, keep the room well ventilated.

Can you use vinegar and baking soda?

Vinegar and baking soda are often presented as the universal solution for every household chore.

When it comes to the washing machine, however, there is no single recipe suitable for every model. Some manufacturers suggest household remedies, while others specifically advise against vinegar and acidic substances because they may damage seals and rubber parts.

The safest choice is therefore to:

  • consult the manual;
  • use the dedicated programme;
  • choose a product approved by the manufacturer;
  • avoid combining different ingredients;
  • avoid improvised quantities.

Vinegar and baking soda also react with each other, neutralising much of their respective acidity and alkalinity. The foam they produce is certainly dramatic, but it is not necessarily a sign of greater effectiveness. Someone had to tell you!🙂

How often should you clean your washing machine?

The frequency depends on the number of washes, water hardness, the programmes used and the manufacturer’s instructions.

As a general guide, you can follow this routine:

After every wash: remove the laundry immediately, dry any water left in the seal and allow the drum and drawer to air.

Once a month: clean the drawer, seal and door; run the maintenance programme if recommended in the manual.

Every two or three months: check and clean the filter.

When a reminder appears: run the Drum Clean or Machine Care function straight away.

When you notice a bad smell: do not simply perfume the drum. Check the seal, filter, drawer and drain too.

Whirlpool suggests an indicative routine every 30 days, while Bosch recommends different intervals depending on the type of treatment and product used: the manual for your model therefore remains the main reference.

How to stop your washing machine from smelling again

A thorough clean solves the problem. Simple!

Do not overdo the detergent and fabric softener: using more does not mean cleaner laundry and it can leave deposits in the dispenser and internal circuit!

Alternate low-temperature washes with the maintenance cycle recommended by the manufacturer and remove the laundry promptly at the end of the programme.

Finally, let the machine breathe. A washing machine that is always closed, still damp and carrying a little fabric softener residue is practically an official invitation to bad smells.

FAQs about cleaning your washing machine

How do you clean a washing machine that smells?

First clean the seal, detergent drawer and filter, then run the Drum Clean programme, if available, with the machine empty and a compatible product. When it finishes, dry the seal and leave the door and drawer open. If the smell persists, check the drain or contact the service centre.

How do you disinfect a washing machine after washing very dirty garments?

Use the maintenance cycle and a disinfectant specifically intended for washing machines, following the manual and product label. Bleach may be used only when expressly permitted by the manufacturer. Never mix it with other cleaning products.

Can you clean a washing machine with vinegar?

Only if the manual for the model allows it. Some manufacturers advise against it because acidity can damage seals and rubber components over time.

Can you use a dishwasher tablet?

It is better not to. The tablets are formulated for a different appliance and may produce unexpected foam or residue. Use a washing machine cleaner or the product recommended by the manufacturer.

What is the best programme for cleaning a washing machine?

The best choice is the dedicated cycle, generally called Drum Clean, Tub Clean or Machine Care. If there is no such programme, use only the empty cycle and temperature specified in the manual.

Do you need to add detergent during an empty wash?

Not necessarily. Some cycles require a specific product, while others must be run without any detergent. Follow the programme instructions and do not automatically use your normal laundry detergent.

How do you clean a blackened or mouldy door seal?

First remove the dirt with a cloth and warm water. For persistent marks, apply only a product compatible with rubber and recommended by the manufacturer, wearing gloves and rinsing thoroughly. If the mould has penetrated the material or the seal has deteriorated, it may need to be replaced.

Should you leave the washing machine door open?

Yes. Leaving it ajar after washing helps moisture evaporate and prevents odours and mould. However, take the necessary safety precautions if children or pets are present.

How do you clean a top-loading washing machine?

Clean the empty drum with the dedicated programme, wash the dispenser and wipe the inside of the lid. Check the manual for the presence and position of the filter, as it may differ from front-loading models.
