Pellet Stoves: Complete Guide to Choosing and the 7 Best-Selling Models of 2025

It's time to say goodbye to the tan and the smell of salty air! If you're thinking about facing the new winter and have decided to revamp your heating system, this guide is for you. Today we're talking about pellet stoves: why choose them, how to choose them, and which are the best-selling models.

Why choose a pellet stove

The first reason is control. A pellet stove allows for better heat regulation: it maintains the set temperature, reduces consumption when power isn't needed, and can be programmed to turn on and off, even via Wi-Fi, so you get home with your slippers already warm. Furthermore, fuel loading can be automatic: an auger draws pellets from the tank and safely doses them into the brazier; many models have removable ash drawers or self-cleaning braziers that minimize manual cleaning.

Then there's the economic and energy aspect: pellets have low moisture content and a constant calorific value, so they perform predictably and allow for high efficiency. They're convenient to transport and store (in clean, space-saving bags) and are a renewable choice, like wood.

It's not all roses and rainbows: a pellet stove requires electricity to operate, a compliant flue, and minimal fan noise is natural. But for those who want comfort, smart management and controlled costs, pellets are often the most balanced choice.

Ventilated pellet stove or ducted pellet stove?

"Ventilated" and "ducted" describe how heat is distributed. A ventilated pellet stove heats the room in which it is installed by pushing hot air towards the façade: it is simple to install and is ideal for living rooms, open spaces, or small apartments.

A ducted pellet stove, on the other hand, sends hot air to multiple rooms through insulated ducts with adjustable vents: it is perfect for covering multiple rooms, but requires careful design and installation (lengths, curves, diameters, insulation) and can require a higher investment.

Hermetic pellet stoves

"Hermetic" (airtight chamber) indicates where the stove draws air for combustion: exclusively from outside via a dedicated duct. It is the recommended choice in new or highly insulated homes (even with CMV) because it protects health, performance stability and comfort; it costs a little more and requires a proper external air intake. (Note: ventilated/ducted and hermetic are not mutually exclusive: there are hermetic ventilated stoves and hermetic ducted stoves.)

How to choose your pellet stove based on kW

Here is a simple way to choose a pellet stove based on kW, without complicated formulas. Start with your home: how many square metres does it cover and how well insulated is it? Count the square metres to be heated and the height of the ceilings (this will give you the cubic metres). For a quick estimate, multiply the cubic metres by a coefficient that takes insulation into account: on average, this ranges from 0.040 to 0.060 kW per m³ (the more insulated the house, the higher the value). Example: 100 m² with 2.5 m ceilings = 250 m³; 250 × 0.040 ≈ 10 kW required.

Modulation (why it is essential?)

Modulation is the stove's ability to continuously vary its power output from minimum to maximum by adjusting the pellet feed and fan speed. A low minimum modulation (typically 1–3 kW) is ideal: in mid-seasons, the stove should not switch off and on continuously (on/off), but remain on at minimum power, maintaining comfort without waste, less noise and less dirt.

If your “maintenance” requirement in autumn is around 2 kW, choose a stove with a minimum of ≤2 kW; if the minimum is 4–5 kW, you will be forced to keep the windows open or switch the stove on and off frequently.

A quick example. Well-insulated house, living area 40–50 m²: average requirement 2–3 kW; 8 kW stove with 2–8 kW modulation = comfortable all year round. Same house with 8 kW stove but minimum 5 kW = too much heat in mid-season → on/off, dirty glass, unnecessary consumption.
